UL-GEMS Team Represent Ireland

THREE emergency medical educators from the Graduate Entry Medical School (GEMS) at UL will represent Ireland at Rallye Rejviz - the Paramedic World Championships - which takes place in the Czech Republic.

The three, who have been in training for the past six months, departed this recently ahead of the championships which are taking place in the town of Knouty.

Competing against over 100 emergency rescue teams from 20 countries the UL-based team, which has more than 60 years experience between them, will put their skills to test against some of the best teams in the world.

“We need to ensure our Paramedic Studies’ students have the best possible learning experience during their course in UL. This means not only the best and most up to date programme but also that our tutors are regularly tested to ensure we can offer the highest standard of education - what better way than to measure ourselves against the global leaders in emergency care,” said team-leader, Mark Dixon, who is director of Paramedic Studies at GEMS, 

Another team member, Alan West is an advance paramedic with the Mid-West Ambulance Service and lectures in Emergency Medical Education on the Paramedic Studies programme a GEMS.

The third team member, Noel Carmody, is from Ennis Co Clare. He is an officer with the Civil Defence and an Advanced Paramedic. He also lectures on the Paramedic Studies programme at UL.

During the championships, teams will have to address 24 unknown patient scenarios over a 50KM circuit, all to be completed in a straight 24-hour endurance shift.
