UL "Introduction to Research" workshop review

The most recent CPR “Introduction to Research” workshop on Wednesday 6th May was reviewed by Mr. Stephen O’ Flaherty (Paramedic, National Ambulance Service, Co. Cork) for the Irish College of Paramedics. Stephen was the inaugural winner of the CPR “Best CPG Forum Post” in 2014 and the prize for this was free attendance at a Research Workshop of his choice in 2015.

The CPG Forum is a platform for PHECC registered practitioners to provide feedback on current CPGs and make suggestions for new CPGs that may be required. The forum can be accessed on www.ul.ie/cpr/forum

The following are some quotes from Stephen on the “Introduction to Research” workshop;

“There was a great array of speakers from within UL and externally…”

“...talked about ethics and how important they are…”

“…very interesting talk on data and analysing it from Ailish Hannigan who is based in the Graduate Entry Medical School…”

“The quote of the talk was “To consult the statistician after an experiment is finished is often merely to ask him to conduct a post mortem examination. He can perhaps say what the experiment died of” (Fisher, 1938)”

“…very interesting chat from Niamh O’Leary about clinical audit…”

“After we fed our minds with all this knowledge it was time for a break and to feed the body. We had a lovely lunch in the Sports Pavilion…”

“I found the group session the most valuable, we were able to apply all our knowledge to creating an audit project and a research project as a group and then discuss the merits of each."

“The take home points were to do research on something that interests you and to get advice early on from experienced researchers either from CPR UL or by contacting someone on the research register…”
“…very enjoyable and very worthwhile; the organisers ran a great workshop with top class facilities…”
