There are two policies for review:
Policy Number 1
Return to Practice and Delayed Entry to Practice Policies (click here to review draft policy)
What is Return to Practice?
Return to Practice is when a registrant has previously been registered and worked as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Paramedic or Advanced Paramedic, but has taken a break from work, for over 2 years for many different reasons and now wishes to be re-registered, to allow them to return to work in their profession.
What is Delayed Entry to Practice?
Delayed Entry is when an applicant for registration has qualified as an Emergency Medical Technician/Paramedic or Advanced Paramedic, but did not apply to register with PHECC, to allow them to work in their profession when they qualified but delayed applying to the register for over two years.
Currently PHECC has no mechanism to support people who want to get back to registration if they have come off the register for any reason, or who may have qualified, but have not worked for over 2 years. Generally, it is assumed that if someone is away from work for less than 2 years, they can continue to work in their profession, meeting all requirements of registration.

Policy Number 2
English Language Proficiency Testing for Registration Policy (click here to review draft policy)
This policy is to put in place a system to test English language proficiencies of potential applicants, for whom English is not their first language and if they have not worked or being trained in English in the recent past. This will impact on a small number of applicants.
When a person applies to PHECC with an international qualification, the Recognition of Qualifications is carried out to ensure that the qualification and the person's previous experience/training means that they are eligible to be considered for registration as an Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic or Advanced Paramedic. However, at the point of registration PHECC need to be able to ensure that their standard of English meets the requirements to deliver safe service to patients.
