Welcome to the CPR Research Update for Jan/Feb 2012. This is a new bi-monthly initiative which aims to keep you up to date with recent developments in prehospital research.

The following articles were published recently and may be of interest;

Abstracts for the 2012 National Association of Emergency Medical Services Physicians (NAEMSP) Assembly. Prehospital Emergency Care 16; 1: 152-187

Research abstracts for the NAEMSP Scientific Assembly, Tucson, Arizona 12-14 January 2012

Holla 2012 Value of a rigid collar in addition to head blocks: A proof of principle study. Emergency Medicine Journal 29; 104-107

The first scientific report to evaluate the method of double immobilisation. It is a proof of principle study performed on healthy volunteers and is limited by the small sample size. A large-scale prospective trial is required for further evidence.

Nolan et al 2012 Resuscitation Highlights in 2011. Resuscitation 83; 1: 1-6

An overview of Resuscitation highlights in 2011 summarising key papers in epidemiology, prevention, quality of CPR, defibrillation, advanced life support, post-resuscitation care and prognostication.

While these articles are published in reputable peer-reviewed journals in many cases the research presented is in the preliminary stages. It is the responsibility of practitioners to ensure that they only operate within their own scope of practise as defined by the PHECC CPGs
