What Constitutes a Profession?

Two dictionary definitions of a profession:

Encyclopedia of Sociology. NY: Macmillan, 1992. p 1554 Call Number: Ref HM17.E5 1991 vol. 3. Four criteria:
  1. Knowledge
  2. Autonomy on the job.
  3. Authority over clients.
  4. Altruistic.

Underlying these four characteristics is a fifth: the public must recognize the occupation as a profession.
